Position Description:

Student park guides will help to provide interpretive services to visitors throughout the 72-mile corridor of the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area. Park guides will support education and interpretation in three primary ways: 1) staffing the Mississippi River Visitor Center (located in the Science Museum of Minnesota in downtown Saint Paul) and the Upper St. Anthony Falls Lock & Dam Visitor Center (located in downtown Minneapolis). Work at the visitor center involves interpreting the Mississippi River system to a wide range of visitors, answering questions, leading formal tours, and engaging with visitors in person and over the phone. 2) Park guides will assist with habitat restoration events. Work includes removal of invasive species, reintroducing and caring for native plant species, safely using a variety of hand tools, and assisting volunteers in restoration tasks. 3) Park guides will assist with presenting large interpretive programs under the direction of park rangers.

These positions are full time, 40 hours a week during the summer but will accommodate class schedule in the spring and fall so start and end dates are flexible. After summer months, part-time work may be available when college is in session.

Mississippi National River and Recreation Area (MISS) is a partnership-based national park in Minnesota. MISS is an urban park encompassing a 72-mile, 54,000 acre urban corridor along the river. MISS manages the Coldwater Spring Unit, a springhouse and reservoir that are contributing elements to the Fort Snelling National Historic Landmark. MISS also coordinates landscape restoration activities with 27 local governmental units on public lands throughout the corridor through an established Habitat Restoration Program (HRE) and Friends group, Mississippi Park Connection. The HRE program focuses heavily on engaging volunteers to complete natural resource management goals and objectives and volunteerism activities at Coldwater Spring and on lands managed by partner agencies. The student biological science technician serves in the resource management division of the park and will work closely with several permanent staff members. This position reports to the Division Manager of Resource Management.

Park headquarters is located in downtown Saint Paul which is easily accessible by many Metro Transit routes including the Metro Green Line.
